There are two Cub Scout/Webelos leader classes that focus on how to conduct a safe and exciting outdoor program for your scouts.
Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) is a one-day training event that introduces leaders and parents to the skills needed to plan and conduct pack outdoor activities, particularly pack camping.
Participants who complete this training course will:
- Understand the focus of the Cub Scout level of the BSA outdoor program.
- Gain the skills needed to plan and carry out a successful Cub Scout-level overnight activity.
- Learn more about the resources available from the BSA for carrying out this activity.
Every Cub Scout Pack must have at least one BALOO-trained adult attending and helping plan each of your campouts. BALOO is a fun and active course. Encourage several parents in your pack to take it!
The next Armadillo District BALOO course is scheduled for Saturday, April 14, 2012. You may attend BALOO training offered by another district or by the Council.
Outdoor Leader Skills for Webelos Leaders (OWL) is designed specifically for Webelos den leaders and their assistants. OWL teaches outdoor-related skills through demonstration and hands-on practice. In addition to covering basic camping skills, this training features planning campouts and finding resources. The course also discusses techniques for teaching some of the Webelos outdoor activity badges that will keep your boys interested and excited about crossing over to Boy Scouts.
Webelos den leaders should attend this training before conducting Webelos overnight camping with the boys and parents of the den. OWL training is also a requirement for earning the Webelos Den Leader Training Award knot.
